Our midwifery practice consists of a team of three wonderful women. Heather works with two apprentice midwives who are students completing the clinical part of their studies. For more information on each of us, please read the bios below. We really enjoy working together.

Heather Hack-Sullivan LDM, CPM

I am a licensed direct entry midwife (LDM) in the state of Oregon and a Certified Professional Midwife as certified by the North American Registry of Midwives. I was trained as an apprentice as part of my completion of my Bachelor’s of Science degree from Birthingway College of Midwifery in Portland, OR where I have been an instructor for over 11 years. I have been attending births since 2000 and have been honored to be a part of over 300 births. I also have two beautiful children of my own.

My path to midwifery started when I was a child and was fascinated with my mother's pregnancies. I vividly remember feeling my younger sister moving around in my mom's belly. When I went bowling as a kid I remember pretending that the ball coming back through the contraption was a baby being born and I had to catch it.

When I had my own babies I was even more in love with the transformative process that my body, heart, and soul went through. I loved the care I received from my midwives and having my son in the spare room of my house with my daughter present was such an amazing day. I was asked to apprentice my midwife when my son was a year old and have been attending births ever since. Every birth is different as every woman and baby has her own story. I am proud to support each woman's individual wishes and visions. I am honored to witness women's strength, men's tenderness, siblings' excitement, and the sacred presence of new babies. I am humbled at each and every birth to be a guardian of this process and all it entails. Birth contains all of life--blood & sweat, tears & laughter-but most of all pure love and joy.

When I'm not attending births I am teaching at the local midwifery college, volunteering at my kids' schools, hanging out with my wonderful family, going to concerts, singing karaoke, knitting or eating sushi.

Jess Elliott, Apprentice Midwife

I began daydreaming of becoming a midwife when I first read about midwives in Our Bodies, Ourselves my initial year of college in 1996. I read whatever I could involving birth, natural medicine and feminism while pursuing my early life love of theatre. After graduating with my first Bachelor’s degree, my sister asked for help through her third trimester and labor of her second child. I was hooked. From there I completed a nine-month introductory midwifery course in Boston, Massachusetts and then headed west for more education.

In 2001 I moved to Portland to attend Birthingway College of Midwifery. After completing my coursework, I apprenticed with two local midwifery practices for two years before happily joining Rosehip Midwifery. With Rosehip, I share the practice’s ideology of individualized client care, family education and informed consent. I love supporting women in their ultimate moments of strength and beauty. With each family that I have the privilege to work with, I am humbled and amazed with the process of their births.

In addition to attending births, I assistant teach at Birthingway College, provide office support for a naturopathic clinic, and work for a local photographer. I have a swell time being crafty, cooking, jazzercising, biking, walking my dog, and taking photos.

Lindsay Jetton, Apprentice Midwife

Lindsay was first called to the path of midwifery in high school, and since then has been pursuing this calling. Besides years of self study in herbalism and natural childbirth, Lindsay became a yoga teacher in 1996 and a doula in 1998. These trainings prepared her for assisting mom and baby yoga classes and working as a doula from 2000- 2003. During this time, she was also an active member of Sonoma County Doula Network in California, spearheading events to raise awareness to the general public about doulas, as well as volunteering for larger California Association of Midwives (CAM) events.

In 2005, Lindsay moved to Portland and continued her general education at PCC, until 2008 when she transferred to the Midwifery Program at Birthingway College of Midwifery. She is currently finishing her 2nd year at Birthingway.

Besides her passions of midwifery and herbalism, Lindsay also enjoys music, jewelry making, hiking, reading, doing anything crafty, and trying new things. She has been part of the birth team at Rosehip Midwifery since August of 2010, and is very excited about being here.
